Ohio Medigap Insurance Plans
Posted by Julia Gilels
Medicare supplementary insurance, otherwise known as ‘Medigap’, is a wise choice for Ohioans to cover the gaps that traditional Medicare leaves for you to cover out of your own pocket. Currently, there are twelve Medigap policies to choose from. There are plans with high-deductibles for more budget-conscious beneficiaries, and there are plans with no deductibles and no copays. Rest assured, there is a supplement to suit your health care needs and your budget.
It is important to note that Ohio Medigap Insurance plans are standardized. Simply put, all companies must offer the same coverage from Medigap plans. This means the only difference between providers is price. The Ohio Medigap Insurance Plans range from letters A-L, with Plan A offering the basic benefits and Plan F being the most comprehensive. However, there are certain benefits that must be included in all Ohio Medigap Insurance Plans.
This list is as follows:
- The first three pints of blood in each calendar year, unless that blood is replaced
- The total cost of in-hospital care beyond the standard 150 days covered by Medicare, until a maximum of 365 lifetime days
- Co-insurance for days 61-90 in the hospital ($265 per day in 2008), as well as co-insurance for your 60 lifetime reserve days.
- Co-insurance benefits of 20% for charged approved by Medicare after Medicare's Part B annual deductible of $135 has been reached.
There are several stipulations that must be fulfilled before you are able to join an Ohio Medigap Insurance Plan. Obviously, you must be at least 65 years of age and a U.S. citizen. Also, you must be enrolled in Part A and Part B. You may be worried about qualifying for these plans with your health. Unlike under-65 insurance or insurance through a previous employer, you are granted six months to join Ohio Medigap Insurance Plans with no health questions asked. This 6-month period begins three months before you turn 65 and lasts three months after you turn 65. It is referred to as your initial enrollment period. This is why it is very important to learn about Medicare and which Medicare Supplementary Insurance plan you wish to use ahead of time to take advantage of this open-enrollment period.
