Medigap Prices

02-12-2011

As 64 year olds approach Medicare, they begin to wonder about Medigap policies and Medigap prices and what choices they should make.  Medigap  policies is another term for a Medicare supplement policy and it pays for the portion of medical bills that traditional Medicare doesn't cover. Medigap policies vary by letter name, from A-N, and the pricing is based off of age and zip code.

As far as rating is concerned, Medigap insurance policies are rated in two ways. The first is issue-age rated, which means that the Medigap cost is dependent on the age at issuance, and the amount will not increase as the covered individual gets older. The second rating is called attained-age rating. When a person obtains a Medigap policy, the Medigap prices are based on his or her age on the policy's start date. As the covered individual ages, premiums increase only if the claims for their pool of insured fly over their premiums.

As far as priced is concerned, as mentioned earlier, price is based on the beneficiary’s age and where they live. There can be significant price differences for the same coverage from one insurance company to another. Shopping prices for the lowest monthly premiums involves two important parts. The first is being sure what kind of coverage is being quoted. Although there are rules, slight variations may exist from one insurer to the next. The second is the rating structure in which the premiums are based.

There are other factors that determine what insurance coverage will cost, much the same as with standard insurance policies. Non-smokers get better rates than those who smoke. Females pay lower premiums for their Medigap cost with certain companies than males do. Sometimes, if you allow the insurance company to withdraw the funds automatically from their bank account, you will receive a reduction in cost, too.

It’s important to understand when you should apply for a Medigap policy. It is best to apply during the open enrollment period or during the time of the guaranteed-issue right. The premium for the supplemental insurance cannot be varied during these times based on health status.

It’s vital to shop around and find the best company and rate for your Medigap policy. Medicare Supplements Made Easy makes it so simple to get your own free summary of all the Medigap prices in your area! Don’t hesitate. Call or click today!
