Medicare Gap Plans

A Medicare Gap Plan is health insurance sold by private insurance companies to fill the “gaps” in Original Medicare Plan coverage. Medicare Gap Plans help pay some of the health care costs that the Original Medicare Plan doesn’t cover. If you are in the Original Medicare Plan and have a Medicare Gap Plan, then Medicare and your Medicare Gap Plan will pay both their shares of covered health care costs.

Insurance companies can only sell you a standardized Medicare Gap Plan. These Medicare Gap Plans must all have specific benefits so you can compare them easily.

You may be able to choose up to 10 different standardized Medicare Gap Plans  (Medicare Gap Plans A through N ). Medicare Gap Plans must follow Federal and State laws. These laws protect you. A Medicare Gap Plan must be clearly identified on the cover as “Medicare Supplement Insurance.” Each plan, A through N, has a different set of basic and extra benefits.

It’s important to compare Medicare Gap Plans because costs can vary. The benefits in any Medicare Gap Plan A through N are the same for any insurance company. Each insurance company decides which Medicare Gap Plans it wants to sell.

Generally, when you buy a Medicare Gap Plan you must have Medicare Part A and Part B. You will have to pay the monthly Medicare Part B premium. In addition, you will have to pay a premium to the Medicare Gap Plan insurance company.

You and your spouse must each buy separate Medicare Gap Plans. Your Medicare Gap Plan won’t cover any health care costs for your spouse, although some insurance companies will offer discounts to spouses who purchase policies from the same company.

Although there are 10 Medicare Gap Plans to choose from, the most popular plan purchased by Medicare beneficiaries is Plan F. This plan has really been designed to be the best “value” plan. Plan F is the most comprehensive plan and will take care of every single out of pocket expense that Medicare leaves you to pay. With plan F and Medicare, you can go to any doctor, specialist, or facility anywhere in the country, and never pay a penny out of pocket.
